Day excursion to Maheshwar
Background: The city of Maheshwar gained prominence in the mid-1700's when the Maratha Queen Ahilyabai Holkar chose to make it her capital. It is said that Queen Ahilya wanted to live on the banks of the sacred river Narmada and glimpse the river first thing in the morning. She chose Maheshwar for its vantage location on the riverbank, and built fortifications, temples and bathing ghats. She invited weavers to settle in Maheshwar, and provided patronage for what is now the famous Maheshwari saree.
About this tour: On this tour, we will visit the Ahilya Fort and Palace to see the typical wooden architecture of Maratha royal residences. We will visit some major temples and see the handloom weaving of Maheshwari sarees at a non-profit. We will go down to the river ghats and take a scenic boat ride on the Narmada. Seeing the ghats of Maheshwar by boat is an unforgettable experience.
After a relaxed lunch at Maheshwar, we will return to Indore.
