Day excursion to Omkareshwar

Background: The island of Omkareshwar in the Narmada River is considered holy as it is the site of one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, the sacred sites where Shiva self-manifested in the form of a fiery pillar of light. Local belief is that the island itself is shaped like an Om, because a depression in the island forms a curve like the number 3. It is also believed that this is the island where the spiritual guru Adi Shankaracharya met his guru Govinda Bhagavatpada.

The island is dotted with many temples, forming a holy parikrama (circumambulation). There are two ways to do the parikrama, on foot or by boat.
